Description
(Original Caption) Approximately 6,000 to 7,000 people, most of them miners, are shown here massed together near Harlan, Kansas, as they listened to speakers of the United Mine Workers of America, after troops and been called out to supervise the reopening of coal mines, despite the "peace treaty" signed by representatives of operators and miners in New York. At the meeting, speakers urged the miners to welcome the troops as cordially as those who requested their presence, for most of the National Guardsmen are themselves sons of miners. Protected by 700 National Guardsmen, miners reported for work on May 15, 1939 at the Harlan pits.
