(Original Caption) The fanfare of trumpets resounds over the countryside to signal opening of a performance of the Mormon Pageant on Hill Cumorah. These trumpeters are seen stationed on the summit of Hill Cumorah. To the left is the gold-leaf covered statue of the Angel Moroni, who according to the Mormon belief, led Joseph Smith, a farm boy of this neighborhood, to the hiding place of the golden plates of the Book of Mormon in 1823. Joseph removed the plates in 1827. They were engraved with the history of an ancient American civilization compiled by the prophet Mormon. Joseph translated the plates and published the text as the Book of Mormon in 1830. On the basis of this book and other revelations, he founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) the same year. This monument erected in 1935, is visible for miles around.
