Wright Sets Gliding Record

Percy T. Jones
Photo ID 51246375
American aviator and inventor Orville Wright (1871 - 1948) flies a glider as he sets a world's gliding record of 9 minutes and 45 seconds, Kill Devil Hill, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, October 24, 1911. English aviator Alec Ogilvie (center), inventor of the first airspeed indicator, watches the flight from the ground with other spectators including reporters Van Ness Harwood of the New York World, Berges of the New York American, and photographer Mitchell of the New York Herald. Also present were Wright's older brother Lorin and nephew Horace. The aviators had originally planned to test Wright's new automatic stabilizer but the surprise appearance of newspapermen prompted them to abandon the test for a record attempt. This was the last major aviation record held by the Wright brothers. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
