Description
Artist's depiction of several incidents of the American Revolutionary period in New York City, late 18th Century. In the center foreground the Sons of Liberty anti-tax guerillas raise a 'Liberty Pole' topped with a liberty cap beside a rebel recruiter's booth which displays a sign reading 'Volunteers Wanted War Liberty Rights.' In the background a group of insurgent militiamen under a striped flag march out with cannon while another group tears down a tavern sign bearing an image of King George III. In the left foreground a Loyalist citizen turns his back in disgust at all the blood treason against his God-appointed king. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
