Description
15th March 1952: A female dockworker at work on the British India Company passenger liner 'Uganda' in Clydeside docks. The ship, built for voyages to East Africa, weighs 15,000 tons and is supported by small stops, called 'daggers', on the slipway for the last half an hour before the launch. One minute before the ceremony the stops are removed and the ship is held by a metal cord which rests on a small guillotine until it is cut as the traditional champagne bottle hits the side of the vessel.
