Description
Photographs taken in Hoctun Cemetery (Mexico) in May 2018.
Hoctun is a Yucatan village located between two colonial cities, Merida and Izamal.
Here is a charming mayan cemetery at the entrance of the village.
Its particularity is to have tombs decorated with naive colorful paintings.
There, Mayan people associate Catholic religion symbols, statue, angels, with symbols of the Mayan world, such as traditional Mayan houses and often El Castillo - the pyramid of Chichen Itza - which adorn the top of the graves.
A grave painter in charge of decoration and renovation explained to me that many of these paintings were inspired by drawings found on funerary material such as candles.
