Description
A very tall crane drilling on the ground to fix a huge iron beam to construct a new quay wall.
The Municipality of Amsterdam owns and manages more than 500 kilometers of quay walls, including 200 kilometers of quay wall construction. The quay wall ensures that the quay and buildings behind remain in their place. The quays in Amsterdam are often hundreds of years old and are mainly located in the busy, historic city center.
The process of replacing inner-city quay walls is complex, for example because of the limited work space on land and water, the chance of damage to adjacent buildings and because of the many interests that have to be taken into account. In addition, quay wall replacement projects now cause a great deal of nuisance and inconvenience for the environment.
