Description
SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP--British Soldiers Lichen (Cladonia cristatella), a Fruticose Lichen. The bright crimson caps are Apothecia--this is the reproductive part of the fungus that produces spores. This is a fairly common (but perhaps one of the best known lichen in eastern North America} but delightful lichen that can be found on decaying wood and soil in the North Woods. This species is relatively pollution-tolerant. A symbiotic relationship exists between an Alga (the photosynthetic component) and a Fungus that produces most of the structural component of the lichen. Both organisms benefit from the relationship (also referred to as Mutualism). Michigan
