Underside of the shell of an abalone (Haliotis sp.) sea-snail, showing the iridescent nacre lining. Abalone are large edible marine molluscs. Nacre is an iridescent shell lining produced by some mollusks. It is composed of the same material that makes up pearls and is commonly used in the jewellery industry.
