Shasta Lake is a reservoir in Shasta County, California, It is within the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area, It is impounded by Shasta Sam, the ninth tallest dam in the United States, Known as the keystone of the Central Valley Project, the outflow of Shasta Dam provides electricity and irrigation water, It also provided Sacramento River flood control below the dam for the Sacramento Valley, The lake has a capacity of 4, 552, 000 acre feet at full pool, an elevation of 1, 067 feet (325 m) and a surface area of 30, 000 acres, making it the state's largest reservoir, and its third largest body of water after Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea, It is located ten miles north of Redding, California, Shasta Lake is popular for boating, water skiing, camping, house boating, and fishing, It was formed by the damming of the Sacramento River, The dam water constructed between 1935 and 1945
