Description
PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN - APRIL 21: Malaika Salah, age 25, HIV positive and from the conservative Tribal belt of western Pakistan, holds her newborn son Yasin while sitting next to her other children on April 21, 2006 in Peshawar, Pakistan. Babies of HIV infected mothers are usually born with the disease, but with proper medication often become HIV negative and healthy by age one. Malaika's husband, who died of AIDS several months before, had given her and her unborn son the disease after being deported back to Pakistan from Dubai, where he worked as a migrant laborer. UNAIDS says the epidemic is exploding nationwide, where HIV testing in the general populace is rare, making effective treatment for most victims almost impossible. While the Pakistani government officially acknowledges less than 4,000 cases nationwide, the UN says that figure could be well over 100,000. December 1 is World AIDS Day, and 2006 was the 25th anniversary of the first diagnosis of the deadly disease. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images)
