Description
Human occupation Berlenga Grande dates back to antiquity, being mentioned as the island of Saturn by Roman geographers. Was subsequently visited by Muslim navigators, Vikings, Buccaneers French and English.In 1513, with the support of Queen Leonor, monks of the Order of St. Jerome settled there for the purpose of providing navigational aid and victims of shipwrecks that frequent the Atlantic coast, beset by pirates, founding the Monastery of Mercy Berlenga. However, food shortages, disease and the constant assaults of pirates and privateers Moroccans, Algerians, British and French, have made life impossible retreat of monks, often incommunicado due to the inclemency of the sea.
