Description
On the coastline of the Datca peninsula of Turkey, is one historical site that is both intriguing and beautiful. Its view stretches out to sea, far into the distance and moored boats bob up and down in the gentle waves of the Aegean Sea in front of it. The place is Knidos and like many other ruins on the Aegean coast, it has an impressive story to tell.Knidos was part of the ancient Greek Dorian-Hexapolis, which organized festivals to honour the gods of Apollo, Poseidon and females nymphs in Greek mythology. Called Carians, the citizens were experts at making quality wine and this helped them to achieve great commercial success through trade with other destinations, both local and foreign. They are mentioned in biblical texts from that time period but after falling under Lydian, Persians, Macedonian and Roman Rule; the Carians were eventually disbanded under the Byzantine Empire.
