Description
Nuruosmaniye Mosque in Istanbul is the first Baroque style mosque to be built. It is located in the district of Cemberlitas near the entrance to the Grand Bazaar. Built between 1748-1755 by architects Mustafa Aga and his assistant Simon Kalfa (Mimar Simeon), the mosque is thought to be one of the finest examples of Ottoman Baroque style and a turning point in Ottoman architecture. The site on which the mosque was built was originally a place of prayer (mescit) for Hoca Sadettin Efendi s wife Fatma Hatun. When Fatma Hatun refused to see the mescit destroyed, Sultan Mahmud I ordered that the mosque be built in its place. After Mahmud Is death, his brother Sultan Osman III named the mosque Nur-u Osmani (Osman s Light) after himself and the mosque s impressive interior illumination.
