Description
Dangerously beautiful acidic lake in Kawah Ijen volcano crater - the site of a labor intensive sulfur mining operation where, amid clouds of poisonous sulfur dioxide gas, miners extract and then carry heavy loads of pure sulphur in baskets on their shoulders up a steep rocky path from the crater floor to a processing plant at the base of the volcano. Location: Kawah Ijen volcano (Ijen crater), East Java, Indonesia
