Description
LONDON, ENGLAND - APRIL 27: The choir sings during a 'Seventh Day Evangelist' service at Crossway Church in the Heygate Estate on April 27, 2013 in London, England. The Crossway Church is an international church, with the congregation made up of native Londoners as well as people from Ghana, Jamaica, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Korea, Brazil, Eastern Europe and the United States. It has been serving the local community at different sites around Elephant and Castle for almost 150 years. The church has been at it's current location in the Heygate estate since 1974. The Heygate estate in central London was built in 1974 as social housing and housed around 3000 people, but fell into a state of disrepair, gaining a reputation for crime and poverty. The estate is due to be demolished as part of the £1.5billion GBP 'Elephant & Castle regeneration scheme', and replaced with 2,500 affordable new homes. The area has become popular with street artists, storytellers, and guerilla gardeners and attracts an array of urban wildlife including bats, birds and mammals. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)
