Description
Palo Duro Canyon, Texas. Successive rock layers can be seen in the second largest canyon in the United States. The red claystone and white gypsum of the Quartermaster Formation are at the bottom, followed by the Tecovas Formation with yellow, gray, and lavender mudstone. Sandstone and coarse gravel of the Trujillo Formation are next, with the sand, silt, clay and limestone of the Ogallala Formation above. The canyon is 120 miles long and 800 feet deep.
